Hit Lists

So this that don’t know, I have been raised around airplane all my life. I had my pilot’s license before my driver’s license. The number one thing they drill into pilot is check lists.

In my tech career, check lists didn't sound as cool a hit list.

So when I started using hit lists, they started calling a hit man. I used to call everyone on my team, monkeys. Then right around that time, there was this marvel comic book, Hit Monkey that just happen to be Japanese like me. So before you know it, the nickname was bestowed. Anyhow…

Hit Lists are your short list of tasks you want to get done that day. Like a hit man, you become laser focused on those lines on your time list. Kill or be killed. Every time you cross one of those lines off your list, there is a feeling of satisfaction. Every time you end the day with an uncrossed line, it is like one of your marks escaped your hunt. But you will get them tomorrow at sun up.

You don’t want to make you hit lists very long. Usually 3-5 big targets. Sure you could add all those smaller targets to the list. But don’t take on too many. Especially when you are starting out. John Wick had a ton of training to become that good.

You will have different hit lists too.

  1. The day-to-day hit list. The ones that bring in the cheddar.

  2. Financial hit lists. That cheddar goes to paying off debts, buying a house, whatever.

  3. Personal development hit lists. 75 Hard.

  4. Family hit lists.

  5. Retro 168.
